The Col d'Ares is asphalted and well developed for a border pass. There is a central reservation on large shares of the road, but it is not equally clear everywhere. The road surface is medium to wide and the route offers mostly flowing Curves instead of many tight Hairpin bends - only a few tight Hairpin bends and some small radii. The road climbs noticeably on short ramps - locally up to around 25 percent. Easy to moderately difficult level for motorcyclists, as the surface and lines are well suited.
The traffic volume is usually moderate; at weekends, during the vacation season and in good Weather, it increases noticeably due to excursion traffic, motorcycles and cyclists.
