Motorcycle Oil Change Made Easy

Regular oil changes are essential for the longevity and performance of your motorcycle. But what should you pay attention to so that your motorcycle continues to run smoothly? In this post you will learn everything important about oil changes!

Why is an oil change important?

The engine oil lubricates all moving parts in the engine, reduces wear and contributes to cooling. Over time, however, the oil loses its lubricating ability and collects contaminants that can damage the engine. A timely change prevents costly damage and ensures consistently high performance.

When should the oil be changed?

The exact change intervals vary depending on the motorcycle model and manufacturer specifications. Generally speaking:

  • Every 5,000 – 10,000 kilometers or once per year, whichever occurs first.

  • For frequent short-distance operation or high stress (e.g. racing track, off-road), more frequent changes may be advisable.

What is needed for the oil change?

Before you begin the oil change, you should have the following materials ready:

Suitable engine oil (according to manufacturer specifications)

    New oil filter

  • Sealing ring for the drain plug (if required)

  • Oil drip tray

    Funnel and cloth

  • Tool (appropriate wrench, oil filter wrench)

  • Gloves and protective clothing

Step-by-step instructions for the oil change

1. Preparation

  • Place your motorcycle on a level surface and bring it into an upright position (e.g. with a mounting stand).

  • Let the engine run for a few minutes so that the oil warms up and drains better.

2. Drain old oil

  • Place an oil drain pan under the drain plug.

  • Carefully loosen the drain plug and let the old oil drain completely.

  • Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug if necessary.

3. Change oil filter

Remove the old oil filter with an oil filter wrench.

Clean the sealing surface on the engine.

Coat the rubber seal of the new oil filter with some fresh oil and screw it in hand-tight.

4. Fill in new oil

Screw the drain screw back in.

Fill the new oil slowly using a funnel (quantity according to manual).

  • Start the engine and let it run briefly, then check the oil level with the dipstick or sight glass and top up if necessary.

5. Disposal of waste oil

  • Used oil must not simply be disposed of in household waste or wastewater! Take it to a disposal facility or a workshop.

  • Conclusion

A regular oil change is a simple but extremely important maintenance task for your motorcycle. With proper preparation and care, you can easily perform this yourself and thus extend the lifespan of your engine.
